How do I create a quiz in my Canvas shell?

e-Learning Support has preserved the Classic Quizzes feature while also enabling the New Quizzes option, so instructors can choose which tool they would like to use each time they create a quiz.

As detailed in this Instructure guide to creating a New Quiz, from the Quizzes page in your course shell, when you click on the "Add Quiz" button, you will be presented with the option to choose which quiz engine you want to use.  You can also save your choice to use New or Classic Quizzes so that it will default to that option in the future.

Once you have selected New Quizzes, you will be directed to the familiar Quiz Details page. Please refer to our "Initial Page" video for a detailed overview of this page.

When you have finished editing your quiz details, you can then proceed to the Build page to begin populating your quiz with content.  Our "Build Page" video provides a detailed overview of this page.

Finally, there are numerous settings to choose from with New Quizzes.  Review our "Settings Page" video for further information.

What question types are available?

In addition to the question types already available with Classic Quizzes, New Quizzes offers Categorization, Hot Spot, and Ordering question types, as well as the option to add Stimulus content that can be connected to other question types.  There are also additional options with the Multiple Choice question type.

Below are Instructure documentation as well short videos detailing each of these changes:

How do I add Honorlock or Respondus Lockdown Browser to my quiz?

Honorlock and Respondus Lockdown Browser work with both Classic and New Quizzes and are enabled in the same way for either:

How do I add accommodations and/or moderate quizzes for a student in my quiz?

Once you have opened a New Quiz and selected the Build option, you will have access to the Moderate tab.  From the Moderate window, you can add accommodations for your students.  One convenient feature of New Quizzes is that any accommodations you set within one quiz will apply universally to all New Quizzes throughout your course.

This Instructure guide explains the process of adding accommodations.

You also have the option to moderate individual student quiz attempts from this screen instead of applying the changes to all New Quizzes. Moderating a quiz attempt includes options such as reopening quiz attempts and managing timer settings. Any moderation settings will apply on top of any existing accommodations.

This Instructure guide explains the process of moderating a student's quiz attempt.

How do I manage item banks?

While Classic Quizzes use Question Banks, New Quizzes utilize Item Banks.  Item Banks can be accessed either from your course navigation menu or from the Build page within any New Quiz.

Once you open your Item Banks library, you have many options, including viewing, searching, editing, sharing, duplicating, or deleting any of your Item Banks or any of your Item Banks' contents.  You can also create new Item Banks from within your Item Banks library.

This Instructure guide demonstrates the various options available for managing Item Banks from within your library.

How do I restrict students from viewing quiz results?

The default setting for New Quizzes allows students to view all results for their quiz attempts.  However, the settings page of New Quizzes offers multiple options, including:

A few variations of the option to show questions, including:

  • Show student responses (for all attempts; only once after each attempt; only after their last attempt, only once after their last attempt; or only within a certain window of time)
  • Indicate response as correct/incorrect (with the options to show the correct answer; show only after their last attempt; or only within a certain window of time)
  • Show item feedback

In addition to showing questions, you can choose to:

  • Show points possible (overall and per question) and/or
  • Show points awarded (overall and per question)

Note: this setting does not affect students' ability to see their quiz grades in the Gradebook.  The Gradebook view is determined by your posting policy.

This guide from Instructure provides a detailed review of your options to restrict the student view of quiz results.

How do I create surveys and practice quizzes?

While Canvas does not offer the Practice Quiz and Un/Graded Survey options that are available with Classic Quizzes, there are some options that approximate these features.

For Practice Quizzes, there is a setting in New Quizzes, "do not mark this assignment towards the final grade."  Quizzes can also be set to 0 points.

For a survey, we recommend using Classic Quizzes or other features outside of Canvas, such as Microsoft Forms or Google Forms.

How do I edit or regrade a quiz question?

For future students who have not yet answered this question:

New Quizzes questions, including those questions in an Item Bank, can be edited by choosing the Build option from any quiz which uses that question.  If some students have already answered that question in a quiz, you will be asked to edit a copy of the question instead.  This will create a new version of the question that will be used by students who have not yet taken the quiz or who still have additional quiz attempts remaining.  This Instructure documentation walks through the steps of editing a quiz and this documentation explains how to edit an Item Bank item.

For students who have already answered the question:

If you wish to regrade a question in order to change the correct answer or the point value for the benefit of students who have already answered it, you can regrade that question.  Regrading only applies to completed submissions.  Regrading is done from within SpeedGrader.  From there, find the question you want to regrade and click the Regrade button.  You will then have the option to change the correct answer or the point value and will be given several options on how to apply the regrade:

  • award points for correct answer(s) only
  • award points for both current and previous correct answers
  • award points for any submitted answers
  • give everyone full credit

Regrading a question from within any student's submission will automatically apply that regrade to all completed submissions.  This Instructure guide explains how to regrade quiz questions.

How do I convert Classic Quizzes into New Quizzes?

Note: Please be sure to review the quiz settings and preview your New Quizzes before publishing and assigning them, as there are differences between New and Classic Quizzes and not all features translate directly.  There are also some outstanding issues with the bulk migration option that Canvas is working to fix.

Migrating an individual quiz

You can copy a Classic Quiz into a New Quiz within the same course shell.  This process is called “migration” and can be done with one click.  You can also migrate surveys, but they will be created as standard quizzes if migrated (see our FAQ on surveys and Practice Quizzes for more information).  Any Question Groups that are contained in the Classic Quiz will be migrated as Item Banks in New Quizzes (see our FAQ on Item Banks for more information).

Instructions: From your Quizzes page, hover over the quiz that you want to migrate and click on the options icon (three dots) on the right.  From that menu, you will see the option to migrate.  The migrated New Quiz will have the same name as the Classic Quiz that it was migrated from but will display the New Quizzes icon (filled-in rocketship) to the left of it to help you distinguish between them.  Review this Instructure guide for screenshots of the process for migrating a Canvas quiz.

Is it possible to see which students got which version of the quiz?

Yes.  After navigating to your quiz and clicking on "Build," choose the "Moderate" tab.  From the Moderate screen, you will see a link for each completed attempt for each student (e.g., "Attempt 1," "Attempt 2," etc.).  Clicking on that link will take you to a page where you can view the specific questions that the student was given as well as their answers.

How do I convert Question Banks to Item Banks?

Question Banks must be affiliated with a Classic Quiz in order to be converted into Item Banks when they are copied into a new course. Unaffiliated Question Banks will be copied as Question Banks and therefore will not be usable in any of your New Quizzes.

If you have any unaffiliated Question Banks that you want copied over as Item Banks, you will need to create a new Classic Quiz which utilizes those Question Banks. You can put all your unaffiliated Question Banks into one quiz using these steps:

  • Navigate to your Quizzes page and create a Classic Quiz
  • Give the quiz a name and then navigate to the Questions tab
  • Click on “Find Questions.” This will bring up a list of all your existing Question Banks.
  • From that list, choose a Question Bank that you would like to convert into an Item Bank. Click on the name of that Question Bank, and then “Select All” of the questions.
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the list of questions. There’s a dropdown there, “Add questions to the question group.” Choose “[ Create Group ]”.
  • Give the newly-created group a name (you can give it the same name as the Question Bank), a point value per question, and for the number of questions, be sure to pick all of the questions in that bank.
  • Click on “Create Group” and then “Add Questions.”

You can repeat this process within the same quiz for as many Question Banks as you want to convert. Once you have finished and saved the quiz, that quiz can now be migrated to a New Quiz within the same course shell (see our FAQ on quiz migration). This New Quiz will have all the accompanying Question Banks now located within the course as Item Banks.

This YouTube video walks through these steps.

Note: There is currently a known issue with Item Bank questions that contain embedded images or links to files stored in the course files. These images and file links, when copied into a new shell, are still linking back to the old course and hence are unavailable to students in the new course shell. Instructure is working to resolve this issue and has recommended a workaround in the meantime. Here is a blogpost from Instructure describing the bug and the current timeline for fixing it.

How can I preview a quiz as a student would see it?

Quiz Preview, which shows what a quiz looks like from a student’s perspective, can be accessed from the Build page of any New Quiz. Once you have finished editing the quiz, click on the “Preview” button. This option allows you to not only test the individual questions, but also see how the different settings affect the quiz’s performance. Once you submit the quiz, you will also see what the results page looks like from the student’s perspective. To continue editing the quiz, click the “Exit Preview” at the bottom right of the screen. This will close the preview and return you to the Build page. This Instructure documentation provides further information on how to preview a quiz, including screenshots.
