Turnitin

Overview

Turnitin is an online anti-plagiarism service which compares student submissions to millions of websites and papers submitted for exact matches to help promote academic integrity and to help identify areas of student writing where additional paraphrasing or further citations may be necessary. This tool can be used to provide feedback to both instructors and students and can help students improve their writing if they are permitted to see their Turnitin score and then revise and resubmit.

Turnitin can be used with Canvas, or as a standalone product. It is integrated into the Assignments tool in Canvas and can be enabled in the Plagiarism Review area of the assignment settings for any text entry or file upload assignment. It is also possible to use more advanced Turnitin features like Peermark by using the Turnitin External Tool.

Updating to LTI 1.3

The Turnitin External Tool LTI has recently been updated to streamline parts of the process, resulting in less clicking and duplication of assignment information in Turnitin and Canvas.

Before you get started, please review the following instructions:

How can I copy assignments I made in LTI 1.1 into this new version?

Once the LTI 1.3 integration is enabled for your Canvas environment, LTI 1.1 assignments will be converted to LTI 1.3 assignments when copied into your new course. Old LTI 1.1 assignments can still be accessed in previous courses.

How can I view LTI 1.1 assignments from previous semesters?

Once you have completed the migration, to view past LTI 1.1 enabled assignments, you must access them from the Turnitin inbox and will not be able to access them through Grades or Speedgrader in Canvas.
